American Black Bear
Ursus americanus

This adaptable bear inhabits forests, swamps, mountains, and wooded edges across much of North America. It is an omnivore, feeding on berries, nuts, roots, insects, carrion, fish, and occasional small mammals or fawns. Adults are usually solitary and rely on strength, keen smell, climbing ability, and bluff displays to avoid or win confrontations. A notable fact is that many enter winter dormancy, surviving for months on stored fat while remaining capable of waking if disturbed.
