Wild Turkey

Meleagris gallopavo

Wild Turkey

An adult wild turkey lives in mature woods, field margins, clearings, and wooded hillsides, roosting in trees at night and foraging on the ground by day. It walks and runs with surprising speed, flies in powerful short bursts, and defends itself with pecks, wing blows, and strong kicks. Its diet is omnivorous, including acorns, nuts, seeds, berries, leaves, insects, and other small animals. A notable fact is that adult males use dramatic feather displays and loud gobbling calls during breeding season.
