Hickory Borer
Megacyllene caryae

The adult hickory borer is a longhorn beetle found around hickory, pecan, and other hardwoods, especially where dead branches or cut logs provide breeding sites. It visits trees in spring, mates on bark, and may fly between suitable wood while feeding little as an adult. Its yellow-and-black pattern closely resembles a wasp, a defensive mimicry that can make predators hesitate. Despite the wasp-like look, it is harmless to people and relies on its hard exoskeleton, quick escape, and disguise rather than venom.
