Small Carpenter Bee
Ceratina dupla

A small, dark, metallic bee found around meadows, gardens, woodland edges, and weedy fields where flowers and broken plant stems are available. It feeds on nectar and pollen, and females excavate narrow nests in the soft pith of dead or cut stems rather than boring into solid lumber. This bee is mostly solitary, though mothers may guard and provision their brood for a time. A notable trait is its tiny carpenter-like nesting habit, which makes old stems and hollow plant stalks important shelter.
