Chestnut-backed Chickadee Hatchling
Poecile rufescens (hatchling)

A newly hatched Chestnut-backed Chickadee remains hidden in a tree cavity or nest box in damp coniferous and mixed forests along the Pacific coast. It is blind, sparsely feathered, and depends entirely on adults bringing soft insects and spiders. Its main behavior is gaping and giving begging calls when it senses a parent nearby. Like other chickadee nestlings, it grows quickly in the safety of a cavity before its flight feathers are ready.
