Dung Beetle
Scarabaeus viettei

An adult Scarabaeus viettei is a compact scarab beetle associated with open ground where mammal dung is available. It feeds on dung and buries portions of it, using strong legs and a hardened body to dig and push through soil. Adults can fly to locate fresh dung but spend much of their active time on the ground rolling, shaping, or burying dung for feeding and reproduction. By removing and burying dung, it helps recycle nutrients and aerate the soil.
