Common Carp
Cyprinus carpio

A hardy freshwater fish found in slow rivers, lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, often favoring muddy bottoms and weedy shallows. It feeds by rooting through sediment with its protrusible mouth, taking in insects, crustaceans, plant matter, detritus, and small mollusks. Common carp are strong, cautious swimmers that can survive in warm, low-oxygen water better than many native fishes. Originally from Eurasia, they have been introduced widely around the world and can greatly disturb aquatic habitats by stirring up bottom sediments.
