Brood X Cicada Shell
Magicicada septendecim
This emerged periodical cicada lives above ground on tree trunks and branches after leaving its underground nymph stage. Adults drink plant fluids and focus on climbing, flying short distances, and finding mates. Males produce loud buzzing calls with specialized sound organs to attract females. After emergence, the empty brown exoskeleton often remains fixed to bark as a familiar sign of the brood.
