Green Heron
Butorides virescens

A compact heron of freshwater and coastal wetlands, usually seen standing still along shaded banks, mangroves, ponds, and marshes. It hunts fish, frogs, insects, and small crustaceans with patient ambushes and sudden bill strikes. Adults often perch low over water and can fly with deep, steady wingbeats when disturbed. A notable habit is tool use: some individuals drop insects, feathers, or other bait onto the water to lure fish within reach.
