Red-necked Grebe
Podiceps grisegena

The adult Red-necked Grebe breeds on freshwater marshes, ponds, and reedy lakes, then often winters on sheltered coastal waters. It dives after fish, crustaceans, aquatic insects, and amphibians, using its lobed feet for strong underwater propulsion. On land it is awkward, but on water it can lunge, slap with its wings, and disappear beneath the surface when disturbed. During the breeding season it is known for elaborate pair displays and loud, harsh calls that carry across the marsh.
