Goldenrod Soldier Beetle
Chauliognathus pensylvanicus

The adult is commonly found on goldenrod and other late-summer flowers in meadows, roadsides, and open fields. It feeds mostly on pollen and nectar, but may also take tiny insects such as aphids when encountered on flower heads. Adults fly between blossoms and are often seen mating in plain view during late summer. Their orange-and-black coloring advertises distasteful defensive chemicals to many predators.
