Desert Leafcutter Ant
Acromyrmex versicolor

Adult desert leafcutter ants live in arid habitats of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where they excavate nests that shelter fungus gardens. Workers cut pieces of leaves, flowers, and other plant material to feed the fungus that the colony eats. An individual worker defends itself with strong mandibles and may use chemical or stinging defenses, but its most important skill is life spent moving between the surface and underground tunnels.
