American Goldfinch Hatchling
Spinus tristis (hatchling)

A blind, mostly bare chick tucked into a compact cup nest in shrubs, saplings, or weedy field edges. It cannot fly and depends entirely on its parents, begging with a wide yellow gape for a slurry rich in soft seeds. Its best defense is staying low and quiet when the nest is disturbed. American Goldfinches are unusual among many songbirds because even their nestlings are fed largely on plant material rather than insects.
