Large Ringlet
Erebia euryale

The adult is a dark brown mountain butterfly of damp meadows, woodland edges, and grassy clearings, especially in cooler upland regions. It flies low and unevenly over grasses while visiting flowers for nectar and seeking mates. The caterpillars depend on grasses, while adults take liquid food through a coiled proboscis. Its ringed eyespots are a useful field mark and may also help startle or misdirect predators.
