Greater Sage-Grouse
Centrocercus urophasianus

Greater Sage-Grouse live in open sagebrush plains and high desert steppe of western North America, where sagebrush provides both cover and most of their food. They feed heavily on sagebrush leaves, buds, flowers, and insects, with chicks relying more on small invertebrates early in life. Males gather on leks in spring, fanning their spiky tails and inflating yellow throat air sacs to produce distinctive popping and booming sounds. This species is one of the largest North American grouse and is closely tied to healthy sagebrush habitat.
