Black-tailed Jackrabbit
Lepus californicus

A long-eared hare of open deserts, grasslands, scrub, and agricultural edges across western North America. It feeds mostly on grasses, forbs, shrubs, and cacti, switching to tougher woody plants when fresh growth is scarce. Rather than living in burrows, it rests in shallow surface depressions and relies on camouflage, sudden bursts of speed, and zigzag running to escape predators. Its oversized ears help shed heat in hot, dry habitats.
