Thief Ant
Solenopsis fugax

Thief ants are tiny yellow to brown ants found in warm, open habitats such as dry grassland, field edges, and gardens, often nesting underground or beneath stones. Workers move through narrow soil tunnels and are famous for raiding the nests of larger ants to steal brood, which they eat as a protein-rich food source. They also take small invertebrates and sugary liquids when available. A notable defense is their strong chemical secretion, which can repel larger host ants despite the thief ant’s minute size.
