Black Firefly
Pyropyga nigricans

The adult is a small dark firefly found on low vegetation, field edges, woodland margins, and gardens during warm seasons. It moves by short flights and walking over leaves while searching for mates, and adults often feed little or take small amounts of nectar or pollen. Like many lampyrid beetles, it is protected by bitter defensive chemicals that make it unappealing to predators. A notable feature of this dark firefly is that adult signaling is much less showy than the bright flashing displays associated with many better-known fireflies.
