Yellow-billed Cuckoo Hatchling
Coccyzus americanus (hatchling)

A newly hatched nestling that remains in a loose twig nest hidden among dense shrubs or woodland branches. It is mostly helpless, with sparse down, closed or newly opened eyes, and small wing stubs that cannot yet support flight. It depends entirely on adults for soft insects, especially caterpillars, and gives begging calls when hungry. This stage grows unusually quickly for a songbird-sized cuckoo, preparing to leave the nest after only a short nestling period.
