Red Swamp Crayfish
Procambarus clarkii

A hardy freshwater crayfish found in swamps, ponds, rice fields, ditches, and slow streams, often in warm muddy habitats. It is an omnivorous scavenger and predator, feeding on plants, detritus, insects, snails, small fish, and carrion. When threatened, it raises its claws, pinches, retreats backward with a rapid tail flip, or digs burrows to survive drought and poor conditions. This species is famously invasive in many regions because it tolerates low oxygen, reproduces quickly, and can alter wetland food webs.
