Alpine Ibex
Capra ibex
Alpine ibex live on steep rocky slopes and high alpine meadows, retreating to cliffs where few predators can follow. They graze on grasses, herbs, mosses, and lichens, often climbing to mineral-rich rock faces to lick salts. Males use their long curved horns in ritualized headbutting contests during the breeding season. Their hooves have hard outer rims and soft gripping pads, allowing remarkably secure movement on near-vertical terrain.
