Oriental Hornet

Vespa orientalis

Oriental Hornet

A large social wasp found in warm, dry regions from the Mediterranean and Middle East into parts of South Asia, often nesting in soil cavities, wall gaps, or sheltered hollows. Adults hunt other insects and scavenge meat to feed larvae, while also taking nectar and sugary liquids for energy. When threatened, a single hornet can deliver repeated venomous stings and uses bold warning colors to advertise that danger. Its yellow cuticle has been studied for unusual light-absorbing properties linked to activity in bright sunlight.
