Brown Water Snake
Nerodia taxispilota

Adult Brown Water Snakes are heavy-bodied, nonvenomous snakes of rivers, lakes, swamps, and wooded wetlands, especially where branches hang over the water. They feed mostly on fish, often ambushing prey from banks, roots, or low limbs and swallowing it whole. When threatened, they may flatten the body, hiss, release musk, bite repeatedly, or drop from a perch into the water. This species is an excellent climber for a water snake and is frequently seen basking several meters above the surface.
