Eastern Calligrapher Fly
Toxomerus gemminata
The adult is a small yellow-and-black hover fly found around flowers in meadows, gardens, roadsides, and other open habitats. It feeds on nectar and pollen, moving with quick hovering flight from blossom to blossom. Its wasp-like pattern helps deter predators even though it cannot sting. While feeding, it also pollinates small flowers that larger insects may overlook.
