American Rubyspot

Hetaerina americana

American Rubyspot

Adults are slender damselflies found along sunny, flowing streams and rivers with emergent vegetation and perches near the bank. They hunt small flying insects on the wing and often return to favored perches between short flights. Males are famous for the vivid ruby-red patches at the bases of their wings, which are used in territorial and courtship displays. Like other damselflies, they rest with wings held together or partly above the body rather than spread flat like many dragonflies.
