Freshwater Shrimp

Gammarus pulex

Freshwater Shrimp

Gammarus pulex is a small freshwater amphipod found among stones, leaf litter, and aquatic plants in clean ponds, streams, and ditches. It swims on its side with quick flicks of the body and spends much of its time grazing on decaying leaves, algae, and other organic debris. Its curved, laterally compressed body is protected by a chitinous exoskeleton, though it remains an important food source for fish, amphibians, and aquatic insects. A notable fact is that pairs often form before mating, with the male clasping the female until she moults.
