Horned Passalus Beetle
Odontotaenius disjunctus

A glossy black beetle of eastern North American hardwood forests, most often found inside damp, decaying logs. It feeds on rotting wood softened by fungi and helps break fallen timber into rich soil. Adults use strong mandibles to chew wood and maintain tunnels where they care for larvae. A notable trait is its audible squeaking, produced by rubbing body parts together when disturbed or communicating in the log.
