Eastern Leaf-footed Bug
Leptoglossus phyllopus

Eastern leaf-footed bugs live in gardens, fields, orchards, and weedy edges across the southeastern and eastern United States. They feed by piercing fruits, seeds, stems, and tender plant tissue with long sucking mouthparts, sometimes causing spots or deformities on crops. Adults can fly and often escape with a loud buzz when disturbed, while their broadened hind legs are used in display and identification. A notable defense is the release of a strong-smelling secretion from scent glands when handled or threatened.
