Alder Spittlebug
Aphrophora alni
The adult alder spittlebug is a small, wedge-shaped froghopper found on trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants in damp woodland edges, hedgerows, and gardens. It feeds on plant sap with piercing mouthparts and escapes danger with explosive jumps, assisted by short flights. Its mottled brown coloration blends well with bark and dead leaves, and adults can occur on many host plants despite the alder name.
