Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos

The adult is a small orange-and-black butterfly of open fields, pastures, roadsides, and sunny woodland edges across much of eastern North America. It drinks nectar from low wildflowers while males patrol close to the ground in search of mates. Its quick, skipping flight helps it move between flowers and evade predators. The pale crescent mark on the underside of the hindwing gives the species its common name.
