Giant Stag Beetle
Lucanus elaphus

A large woodland beetle found around mature hardwoods, fallen logs, sap flows, and sometimes lights at night. Adults feed on tree sap, overripe fruit, and other sugary fluids rather than solid wood. Males use their oversized, antler-like mandibles to grapple rivals and lift or shove them away from mates and feeding sites. Despite their heavy armor, adults can fly with their hind wings folded beneath hard wing covers.
