Blue Mud Dauber
Chalybion californicum
The adult blue mud dauber is a slender metallic-blue wasp found around buildings, cliffs, and other sheltered sites where mud nests can be reused or repaired. It hunts spiders, including widow spiders, and subdues them with a venomous sting before stocking nest cells for its young. Adults feed mainly on nectar while searching widely by flight. A notable trait is its habit of taking over old mud-dauber nests rather than always building new ones from scratch.
