American Ant
Myrmecina americana

This tiny ant lives hidden in eastern North American leaf litter, soil, and decaying wood, where small colonies nest under stones or in rotten logs. Workers move slowly and secretively while searching for minute arthropods and other organic scraps. When disturbed, they may freeze or tuck in their legs, relying on their hard exoskeleton and concealment rather than speed. A notable trait of Myrmecina ants is their cryptic, soil-colored body form, which makes them easy to overlook despite living close to the forest floor.
