Asian Water Monitor Juvenile
Varanus salvator (juvenile)

Juveniles range farther along stream edges, rice fields, drainage canals, and forest margins, often climbing or swimming to escape danger. Their diet expands to frogs, fish, eggs, carrion, small reptiles, and rodents when available. They are alert hunters that investigate scent trails with a flicking tongue and rush at small prey from cover. At this stage they are still vulnerable to large snakes, raptors, and adult monitors, so quick movement and hiding remain important.
