Reddish-brown Stag Beetle
Lucanus capreolus

The adult reddish-brown stag beetle inhabits deciduous woods, forest edges, and yards where old logs and stumps remain. Adults feed sparingly on sap, ripe fruit, and other sugary fluids, while males use their enlarged antler-like mandibles to wrestle rivals. They are capable fliers and are often attracted to lights on warm summer nights. Despite their fierce appearance, the large jaws are mainly used in contests rather than for hunting.
