Flamed Tigersnail
Anguispira alternata

A small terrestrial snail of moist eastern North American woods, often found under logs, stones, bark, and deep leaf litter. It feeds mainly by rasping fungi, algae, lichens, and decaying plant material with its radula. When disturbed, it withdraws into its banded, low-coiled shell and relies on mucus and stillness rather than speed. The shell’s flamed or tiger-like dark streaks give this snail its common name and help it blend among mottled forest debris.
