Common Thread-waisted Wasp
Ammophila procera

Common thread-waisted wasps are solitary, slender wasps often found in open fields, sandy paths, gardens, and dry disturbed ground. Adults feed mainly on flower nectar, while females hunt caterpillars and other soft-bodied larvae as food for their young. A female digs a small burrow, places a stung prey item inside, and lays an egg on it before sealing the chamber. Their extremely narrow “thread” waist is a notable feature that gives the group its common name.
