Small Heath
Coenonympha pamphilus

The adult is a small butterfly of sunny grasslands, heathland, dunes, and open rides, usually flying low over short vegetation. It feeds on flower nectar while males patrol territories and females search for fine grasses on which to lay eggs. Its behaviour is quick and fluttering, with frequent basking to warm the flight muscles. A notable feature is the single eyespot on the forewing, which can help distract or startle predators.
