Smooth Ground Beetle
Carabus glabratus

A large, black ground beetle found in damp woodland, heath, moorland, and under stones or logs across northern and central Europe. It is a nocturnal predator, walking through leaf litter to hunt slugs, worms, insect larvae, and other small invertebrates with strong mandibles. The adults are typically flightless, relying on sturdy legs, a tough exoskeleton, and chemical defensive secretions rather than escape by air. Its smooth, dark wing cases help distinguish it from many more strongly ridged ground beetles.
