Leather Beetle
Carabus coriaceus

The leather beetle is a large, flightless ground beetle found in damp European woodlands, hedgerows, gardens, and leaf litter. It is mostly nocturnal, roaming the ground to hunt slugs, worms, insect larvae, and other small invertebrates with strong mandibles. Its black, leathery wing cases are fused, trading flight for a sturdy armored body. When threatened, it can release a foul caustic chemical from the rear of the abdomen to deter predators.
