Dusky-banded Forest Fly
Chalcosyrphus nemorum

A small hoverfly of damp woodlands, forest edges, and shaded clearings, often seen hovering over leaves or visiting low flowers. Adults feed on nectar and pollen, while the larvae develop in moist decaying wood and other rotting plant material. Its banded body helps it resemble a stinging wasp, though it is harmless and relies on flight and mimicry rather than weapons. Like many hoverflies, it can hold a remarkably steady hover before darting away in an instant.
