Range Crane Fly
Tipula simplex

The range crane fly is a delicate, long-legged fly found around open grasslands, ranges, and damp vegetated areas where its larvae can develop in moist soil or plant litter. Adults are weak but persistent fliers, often resting on grasses and taking short fluttering flights when disturbed. They do not bite people; adults generally feed little, if at all, while the larvae feed on decaying vegetation and roots. A notable feature is its extremely fragile legs, which can break away easily and help it escape handling or predation.
