Small Milkweed Bug
Lygaeus turcicus
The adult small milkweed bug favors sunny grasslands, field edges, and gardens where milkweed and related seed plants grow. It feeds mainly on seeds with a piercing-sucking beak and is often seen resting or mating on seed pods. Fully developed wings allow short flights between host plants when disturbed. Its bright black-and-red pattern is a warning that milkweed-derived chemicals make it distasteful to many predators.
