North American Deermouse
Peromyscus maniculatus

The North American Deermouse is a small, agile rodent found across forests, grasslands, shrublands, and rural edges throughout much of North America. It is mostly nocturnal, feeding on seeds, nuts, fruits, fungi, insects, and other small invertebrates while using quick dashes and cover to avoid predators. It nests in burrows, logs, rock crevices, or abandoned structures, often storing food for colder periods. A notable fact is that this widespread species is an important wild reservoir for hantaviruses, so real encounters should be handled with care.
