Red Flat Bark Beetle
Cucujus clavipes

The adult is a thin, bright red beetle found under bark on fallen logs and dead trees, where its flat shape lets it squeeze through narrow spaces. It moves about to feed, shelter, and find mates, and can fly when dispersing to new wood. Its diet includes small invertebrates and organic material encountered under bark. One notable fact is that its flattened body is so specialized for bark crevices that it can vanish into gaps only a few millimeters wide.
