Hooded Grouse Locust
Paratettix cucullatus

The adult is a tiny shore-loving pygmy grasshopper found around moist fields, stream margins, marshes, and muddy pond edges. It grazes on algae, mosses, lichens, and fine plant matter, staying close to the ground where its mottled colors match the substrate. When disturbed it usually freezes, drops into cover, leaps, or makes a short low flight. Its extended hood-like pronotum covers much of the back, giving the insect a compact armored look.
