Bridle Shiner
Notropis bifrenatus

A small, slender freshwater minnow of quiet, clear streams, ponds, and marshy backwaters with abundant aquatic vegetation. It feeds on tiny crustaceans, insect larvae, algae, and other fine organic material picked from the water column or plant surfaces. Bridle Shiners are quick, delicate swimmers that rely on darting movements and submerged plants for cover rather than strength. A dark stripe running from the snout through the eye and along the side gives the fish its “bridled” appearance.
