Black Drum
Pogonias cromis
An adult black drum is a sturdy bottom-dwelling fish of bays, estuaries, surf zones, and coastal waters. It feeds heavily on mollusks, crabs, shrimp, and worms, using strong crushing plates in the throat to break hard-shelled prey. Adults often forage by nosing through sediment and can tolerate a wide range of salinity. A notable trait is the deep drumming sound produced with muscles around the swim bladder, especially during spawning activity.
