Northern Flying Squirrel
Glaucomys sabrinus

The adult Northern Flying Squirrel lives in mature boreal and montane forests, nesting in tree cavities and moving mostly at night. It eats fungi, lichens, seeds, buds, insects, and occasional animal matter, playing an important role in spreading fungal spores. Rather than true powered flight, it glides between trees on a furred membrane stretched between its limbs. Its broad tail acts as a rudder and brake during controlled glides through the canopy.
