Florida Woods Cockroach
Eurycotis floridana

A large, dark cockroach of the southeastern United States, often found under bark, in rotten logs, and among damp leaf litter. It feeds mostly on decaying plant material and other organic debris, helping recycle nutrients on the forest floor. When threatened, it lifts its body and releases a strong-smelling defensive spray from glands near the rear. Unlike many familiar roaches, adults have reduced wings and are not strong fliers.
